Driving can be expensive, but improving your vehicle's fuel efficiency can help you use less fuel while getting from point A to point B.

There’s a lot of advice out there, so here are five simple tips to help you cut costs on your daily travel.

You can also find out more techniques for fuel-efficient driving in our article ‘What is hypermiling’.

5 top tips for making your car journeys more fuel efficient

Here are five simple tips that could save you a considerable amount of money by making your vehicle more efficient on the road:

1. Remove excess weight

The key to fuel efficiency is the amount of weight that your vehicle’s engine is being asked to move. So one easy way to boost your fuel economy is to simply declutter and take out anything that you don’t need to be transporting from place to place.

This can easily be achieved by removing any unnecessary items from your boot and the interior of the vehicle. Don’t forget to remove bicycle racks, roof bars or tent boxes if they aren’t needed for your journey.

Another thing that's often overlooked is the amount of fuel in your tank. Driving with between a quarter and half a tank of fuel is much more efficient than driving with a full tank of petrol.

2. Plan your journeys in advance

Getting lost can be a real headache, and it can add significant cost to any journey. As a result, it’s important to know precisely where you are going and how you will get there before embarking.

A sat-nav can be a handy tool to ensure you are always following the correct path to reach your destination with a minimum of detours and traffic, while technologies like Google Maps can let you scout out routes ahead of time to know what to expect along your journey.

Telematics sensors are also a great way to save money on fuel costs, as they enable you to plan the most efficient route. Find out how telematics can help to minimise fuel costs and reduce fleet emissions in our article ‘How telematics can help reduce car emissions’.

3. Stick to the speed limit

Driving faster can significantly increase the amount of fuel your engine uses. For example, studies show that a vehicle going 80 mph consumes about 10% more fuel than one going 70 mph. This is why it always pays to stick to the speed limit.

Smoother driving will help to ensure you are asking less of your vehicle’s engine, so always look ahead on the road to anticipate any potential hazards. By avoiding sharp braking and acceleration where possible, you can drive much more fuel efficiently.

4. Keep your tyres at the proper pressure

According to the RAC, low tyre pressure increases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, with a tyre under-inflated by 20 percent reducing economy by around 20 percent.

To fix any issues with tyre pressure, check your vehicle's manual to find the recommended psi for both the front and rear tyres. You can then easily inflate or deflate each tyre to achieve the correct pressure.

5. Carry out regular maintenance

One essential step to improving the efficiency of your vehicle is to ensure it is being regularly maintained and the multitude of parts to be found on your vehicle are all in good working order.

At Motia, we offer discounts on fleet maintenance and repairs when you have your vehicle checked and serviced at any one of thousands of garages up and down the country.
