What is the EV charging policy in the workplace?

A workplace EV charging policy will guide and regulate charge point usage at work premises and may also include guidelines for home charge usage too. A workplace EV charging policy will explain the terms of usage for staff and for any visitors to the premises.

Is workplace EV charging free?

Whether workplace charging is free or not is entirely up to employers. Electricity is not currently classed as a vehicle fuel by HMRC, so there isn’t currently any benefit-in-kind implication for businesses. It might be necessary for employers to account for workplace charging more carefully in the future.

Is workplace EV charging a taxable benefit?

Yes – because workplace EV charging is a non-cash perk, it is considered by HMRC to be a taxable benefit.

Can my company pay for my EV charger?

Our 2024 Fleet Manager Survey suggests that 55.5% of businesses with fleets accommodate home-based charging. Around 60% of respondents said they offer workplace charger installation as either a BIK or as a gift. Speak with your fleet manager to learn more about the options available to you.
