Europe is “leading the way” in adopting electrified fleets, according to the latest edition of Arval’s long-established Corporate Vehicle Observatory Barometer. This transition is said to be driven by environmental concerns, the need to reduce fuel costs, and the need to maintain a good company image.

Globally, adoption rates vary according to the survey, but Europe is in first place by 75%. Arval found “69% of companies with passenger cars are using or considering at least one alternative energy technology in the next three years”, including battery-electric vehicles, plug-in vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles.

No surprises

Oana Duma, head of Arval Mobility Observatory, said: “While the transition to electrified fleets faces obstacles such as charging infrastructure and purchase prices, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and growth.

“Companies are developing charging strategies and exploring cost-efficient financing methods, such as full-service leasing and incorporating second-hand vehicles into their fleets… By leveraging telematics and connected vehicle technologies, companies can promote safer driving practices, reduce accidents, and enhance operational efficiency.”

The 2018 edition of the Corporate Vehicle Observatory Barometer study revealed a bias toward larger fleets to use telematics. Telematics was installed in 56% of fleets comprising more than 50 vehicles, dropping to 17% for fleets of fewer than 10 vehicles.
